CorkCityFC.ie: City beaten at the Belfield Bowl

UCD    3                      Cork City         0

Tommy Dunne said before the game that Cork City would need some luck to get a result in the UCD Bowl – but sadly for the Leesiders they didn’t get an ounce of it as they were put to the sword by the Students.

UCD marksman David McMillan took his tally to twelve for the season with two excellent goals before Hugh Douglas made the game safe with a well taken header. McMillan’s brace takes him to 40 in UCD colours, making him the Students third highest all-time goalscorer in the league.

The defeat for CCFC extends their winless streak in the UCD Bowl which now stretches back to June 2008 and a 2-0 win – a certain Dave Mooney scoring the goals on that occasion.

How the Rebel Army could have done with such a prolific figure against UCD as they failed to take the chances of note which came their way, and Dunne is sure to be disappointed by his side’s failure to open up a team with the leakiest defence in the league heading into the game.

The game was only 35 seconds old when UCD opened the scoring. Robbie Benson picked the ball up on the left flank and his cutback found the onrushing Robbie Creevy, whose first time effort was well blocked by CCFC’s Darren Dennehy.

However, the ball broke kindly to David McMillan and the Students’ top marksman made no mistake, firing into the empty net to open the scoring – just as he did in the April encounter between the sides – for his 11th goal of the season.

The Leesiders could have been rattled but they responded positively, though Daryl Kavanagh’s second minute effort was wild and flew well over. Moments later, the other Daryl – Horgan – was doing his best to twist UCD fullback Mark Langtry inside out as he worked himself some space to send a teasing cross into the area. However, Mark McGinley fisted away and the chance came to nothing.

The frantic start continued in the ninth minute when UCD almost produced a carbon copy of their opening goal.

McMillan’s skewed drive from the edge of the area found Gary Burke and he played it just inside penalty area where Sean Russell arrived to drill a first time effort goalward. Mark McNulty was beaten but not Darren Dennehy who blocked in the six yard box. This time, the Rebel Army managed to clear their lines.

UCD had some nice passages of play but, barring a Gareth Matthews free-kick which flew well over the bar, failed to convert this into decent opportunities. Daryl Horgan began seeing more of the ball and UCD were failing to cope with him.

On fifteen minutes, he embarked on a run, shaking off three challenges before feeding Gearoid Morrissey. The left winger’s driven cross was cut out by Douglas, winning CCFC the first corner of the game. Horgan dropped it in the six yard box but McGliney punched away under pressure.

This was to become a theme of the first half as a number of Cork crosses into the penalty area were competently dealt with by McGinley, leaving the Leesiders frustrated as all of their joy was coming from the wide positions. UCD’s 4-2-3-1 system was nullifying CCFC’s central threat but left the Students’ fullbacks exposed, allowing Danny Murphy in particular to get forward and put in a number of dangerous balls.

One Murphy cross saw Shane Duggan connect just inside the area with a fierce acrobatic left-foot volley. Sadly, it flew well over, but it drew a number of ‘oohs’ from the crowd.

CCFC would be made to rue those missed opportunities as UCD doubled their lead in the 52nd minute – and there was little McNulty in the Cork goal could have done about it. David McMillan picked up a loose ball 30 yards from goal and hit a thunderbolt past the ‘keeper’s despairing dive to leave the Rebel Army with a mountain to climb.

After that, UCD began to exert their dominance more and more, the frustration showing in a challenge made by Dennehy on McMillan which resulted in the game’s first yellow card. Daryl Horgan, the bright spark of the first half, faded out of the game and so did the Leesider’s chances of staging a comeback in the 69th minute when UCD trebled their lead.

It was a goal simple in execution, a pinpoint delivery by UCD substitute Samir Belhout was met by the head of centre-back Hugh Douglas and though McNulty got a hand to it he couldn’t prevent the ball from nestling in the back of the net.

CCFC were fortunate not to ship any more goals as UCD piled forward, with McMillan eagerly seeking his hat-trick. However, he saw an effort blocked after the ball pinballed around the box following a corner, while Samir Belhout spurned a glorious opportunity to add a fourth when he shot into the grateful arms of McNulty.

At the final whistle, the travelling Cork fans voiced their displeasure, chanting: “What a waste of money.” Tommy Dunne’s charges will be disappointed with that reaction but they know that they will need to pull off a result against Drogheda for the second time in three weeks on Monday or else be put under renewed scrutiny.
