Birthday boy Jake Donnelly turns 19 on the same day as his side’s Enda McGuill u19 cup semi-final against Drogheda United at Parnell's in Coolock this weekend – and he isn’t at all picky when it comes to potential presents.
“A place in the final would be nice,” he told loi19.com simply before adding, “I couldn’t believe it when they told me the game was on the 9th of February!”
However, the Shelbourne skipper is well aware that Drogheda United will not be in gift-giving mood come one o’clock Sunday afternoon when the second of the Enda McGuill Cup semi-finals kicks off. And despite boasting an impressive 100% record from six games against the Drogs at u19 level, Donnelly is too keenly aware of the pitfall of complacency to fall into it blindly.
“We’re confident but we know ourselves that we have to respect them,” he stressed. “We got a big result against them earlier in the season [6-0 at IT Blanchardstown in November], but that’s a long time ago now and we know that they’ll be at their best against us so it will take our best to beat them.”
